How many Joules in a KiloJoule?

Joules and KiloJoules are units of the international system of units (SI) that measure energy. The standard symbol for Joule is J [1], whereas the symbol for KiloJoule is KJ. 1 J equals precisely 0.001 KJ, therefore there are 1,000 Joules in a KiloJoule.

    Difference between Joules and KiloJoules

Joules and KiloJoules are used when measuring energy, but differ in magnitude. While the KiloJoule is a derivative of the Joule, the Joule itself is a derivative metric, equal to the energy transferred to (work done on) an object when a force of one newton acts on it in the direction of its motion through a distance of one meter (1 newton meter or N⋅m). An equivalent definition is the energy dissipated as heat by an electric current of one ampere passing through a resistance of one ohm for one second.

The energy unit is named after the 19-th century English physicist James Prescott Joule (1818–1889) who had significant contributions to physics, particularly related to the nature of heat, and is credited with the discovery of its relationship to mechanical work.

How to convert Joules to KiloJoules

Conversion from Joules to KiloJoules is done for calculations related to energy requirements in machinery, electrical grids, as well as biological entities. This conversion is quite simple – all you need to do is use the formula:

J / 1,000 = KJ

Naturally, having a calculator would make it easy to compute, but just moving the decimal point 3 positions to the right will lead to the same result.

Joules to KJ conversion example

Sample task: convert 2500 J to KJ. Solution:

J / 1000 = KJ
2500 J / 1,000 = 2.50 KJ
End result:
2500 J is equal to 2.50 KJ
