    Years calculations

The How many years calculator allows you to calculate how many years there are between any two years. It can be used to calculate the age of a person, an animal, a car, a real estate property, or even a company. First, enter the year to count from, then the year to count to, and finally click "Calculate how many years". The result includes both the number of incomplete years and full years and is useful in answering questions like "1997 to 2026 how many years", "how many years from 1995 to 2026", "how long ago was 1985" or "how many years has it been since 2005".

Alternatively, you can use the calculator to add a number of years to a given year, such as the current year, and find out what year it will be after that number of years. To find out what year will be 20 years from today, just select "What year will be in X years", enter how many years you want to add, and press calculate.

    How many years between two years

Calculating the number of years between any two years is a matter of straightforward subtraction of the earlier year from the later one. For example, how many years from 2000 to 2020? Subtracting 2000 from 2020 we obtain 20 years. If full years are of interest, one year should be subtracted from the result of the previous operation. Continuing the example, there are 2020 - 2000 - 1 = 19 full years from 2000 to 2020.

This simple math can become more challenging and prone to errors when the numbers get big and the year difference is larger. That 2020 to 2026 is six years if the count includes 2020, or five years if counting from the end of 2020 can be calculated without any aid. It gets much harder if the question is how many years are from 1965 to 2026.

Years in between vs including the first year

A slight confusion, resulting in a mistake by one year can occur if one is interested in the number of full years since a given year, but the question is misunderstood as including the initial year. When talking about age, the number of full years is called the complete age, while including the initial year results in the running age. The former is always one year greater than the latter.

For example, if asking how many full years are between 1970 and 2026 the answer is 55. If one asks which year one's life is in 2026, assuming they are born in 1970, then the answer is that if they were born in 1970, they are now in year 56 of their life.

    How long ago was a given year

The table below can be used to quickly calculate how many years ago was a given year from the recent past. It is great in figuring out how old someone or something is in 2026.

Essentially, the table shows how many years have passed since the year in the first column began, as of the present time. The right-most column shows how many years there are between the two years, which means it shows the number of full years.

Here is an example on how to read it. Say you are interested in how long ago was 1989. Find the row which says "1989 to 2026". The first column to the right lists the number of years between 1989 and 2026, with the initial year included. The column after it shows that it was 36 years ago, which is the number of full years that have passed since the end of 1989 till now.

    How old was I in a given year?

You can use this Years calculator to determine what your age was at any given year in the past. If you were born in 1983 and want to check how old you were at the turn of the Millenium (the year 2000), just enter 1983 to 2000 to see how many years there were from 1983 to 2000. The result is 16 full years, meaning you were 16 at the beginning of 2000, and you turned 17 that same year.

    How many years until the year YYYY?

Specifying any future year in the "to" field allows the calculation of the number of years that will pass between now and a given year into the future. For example, to find out how many years in the future the year 2050 is, just enter 2026 to 2050 to get the result. Alternatively, you can also enter a past year and check how many years will elapse by a specific year in the future, such as 1980 to 2050, which results in 70 years (69 full years in between).

    What year will it be X years from now?

People sometimes wonder what year will be when they graduate college or university, when their mortgage ends, or when they will have reached a particular age like 50, 60, 70, 80, or 90 years old. In this case, all you need to know is how many years to add to the current year, or any year for that matter. If you are signing for a 30-year mortgage now and want to know when you will be mortgage-free if you don't refinance it, then all you need to do is simple addition of 30 to 2026, resulting in the year 2056.
