How to use the height comparison tool
The versatile tool for comparing height can be used in several ways:
- as a height difference calculator, to determine the difference in height between any two people or objects, such as in a couple
- as a height scale comparison tool a.k.a. height comparison chart generator, to compare multiple people's heights
- as a height comparison visualizer, for any number of real people, celebrities, or fictional characters
To use it in all of these scenarios just enter the number of people you want to compare, then enter each person's height and press "Compare heights". The heights can be entered in feet and inches, or in centimeters.
Optionally, you can enter a name for each person. This is especially useful if you are comparing the heights of several people or characters as it makes it easier to track which is which on the comparative chart. Additionally, you can specify the person's biological sex: male and female. This only affects the visual output of the height chart where a different figure will be displayed depending on the selection. If unspecified, the graph would be drawn with male figures by default.
The calculator always outputs a chart containing a visual height comparison. It supports up to twenty figures which is useful if writing a novel, story, DnD campaign, or if you are an artist looking to depict a character's height faithfully. It does get cluttered once you go over ten, so use the expanded view and the chart which will pop up in a larger overlay.
If you are comparing the stature of two people the tool will also output the difference in height between the two persons. This is basically a size comparison in a couple. With three persons the height difference calculator outputs the height difference between each possible pair, for a total of three pairs. For four or more people the number of differences grows exponentially and so they are not calculated.
Height difference calculation
Height differences are fairly straightforward to calculate, given the two statures are provided in the same measurement units. In the imperial system that would typically be in feet and inches (ft and in), e.g. 5 feet 3 inches, often abbreviated to 5 ft 3 in, 5′3″ or just 5′3. In the metric system height is typically measured in centimeters (cm), e.g. 160 cm, 180 cm, etc.
With metric units, the calculation is a straightforward subtraction of one number from another. Typically, we would want the absolute value, so we would subtract the smaller from the higher number, e.g. 180 cm - 160 cm = 20 cm difference.
With imperial units, the math can be a bit harder. Say we have a couple in which the woman is 5′4″ tall, whereas the man is 6′ tall (six feet tall). Knowing that there are 12 inches to a foot, we can write 6′ as 5′12″ which means we can get the height difference in inches by subtracting 4 from 12: 12″ - 4″ = 8″ difference between the two.
If the heights are in different measurement units, some in ft and in and others in cm and meters, you need to use a metric to imperial converter or an imperial to metric converter first, before you proceed with the calculations as described above.
Comparing heights with a chart
A height comparison chart like the one generated by our tool can be useful in visually determining the height difference between two or more people. It can help one get a better understanding of how the people would look together, when standing face-to-face, and so on. Let us see how that works using an example.
Height difference chart
In the comparative chart above, there are horizontal lines right above the head of each person to show how high they are, helping with the visual height comparison. Additionally, light horizontal lines pass through each figure at a fixed distance. These are helpful in determining where one person's eye level would be, where their shoulders would be compared to other people's, etc.
A non-orthodox way to use this tool is to compare the height of a person to that of an object, such as furniture, a house, a spear, a sword, or a fictional object. It requires a bit of imagination, but is entirely doable.
Comparing height visually using a chart is generally recommended, especially if the figures are accurately plotted. In our height comparison calculator we have taken care to plot the figures precisely to scale in order to allow for an accurate height comparison.
Height difference table
Often, one may be interested in the height difference between couples. It could be for a celebrity couple, or someone might be interested in how they would look next to a potential dating partner. For example, a 5 ft 2 in (5′2″) tall woman might be curious how she would look next to a taller guy with a stature of 5 feet 10 (5′10″) high or why not a six foot tall (6′) man.
The table below shows some commonly encountered height differences between men and women based on the average height of the two sexes.
Her height | His height | Difference | Chart link |
---|---|---|---|
5′2″ | 5′10″ | 8″ (8 in) | see chart |
5′3″ | 5′10″ | 7″ (7 in) | see chart |
5′4″ | 5′10″ | 6″ (8 in) | see chart |
5′2″ | 5′11″ | 9″ (9 in) | see chart |
5′3″ | 5′11″ | 8″ (8 in) | see chart |
5′4″ | 5′11″ | 7″ (7 in) | see chart |
5′2″ | 6′ | 10″ (10 in) | see chart |
5′3″ | 6′ | 9″ (9 in) | see chart |
5′4 | 6′ | 8″ (8 in) | see chart |
5′2″ | 6′1″ | 11″ (11 in) | see chart |
5′3″ | 6′1″ | 10″ (10 in) | see chart |
5′4″ | 6′1″ | 9″ (9 in) | see chart |
If you are interested in a height comparison of fictional character couples, then the heights might vary considerably than those presented in the tables above so it is best to use the height difference calculator above.
Height comparison to a general population
In some cases it may be desirable to compare one's height to that of a general population, e.g. to the average height of the World's population, or to all men, all women, or to people in a specific country such as the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, etc. In such cases it is best to refer to our height percentile calculator first due to its large database of height data.
If you then want to compare yourself to an average height of interest just enter how tall you are for Person 1 and then enter the average height for Person 2 and the height comparison calculator will generate the comparison chart.
