Both units are used for land area measurements. The symbol for Acre is "ac" and the symbol for Hectare is "ha".
Difference between Acres and Hectares
Both units used to measure land area thus, both are units of area. The Acre is a part of the Imperial system of units, while the Hectare is a non-SI unit accepted for use as part of the metric system of units.
Historically, the hectare was defined based on the "are", with one are equaling 100 square meters and a hect-are (hence the symbol ha) being 100 ares (10,000 m2). However, the are was dropped from the SI units system in 1959. The definition of the Hectare is now fixed to that of the meter.
The acre is an old unit which in the Middle Ages, by some accounts, amounted to the area of land that could be ploughed in a day by a yoke of oxen. Relative to other traditional measures, the acre was defined as the area of one chain by one furlong (66 ft by 660 ft), which equals 10 square chains or 1⁄640 of a square mile. In 1959 it was defined to be exactly 4,046.8564224 square meters. The acre saw wide use in the United Kingdom and almost all countries of the former British Empire but is now only informally used in some of those countries. The acre is currently a statute measure for tracts of land only in the United States.
