1 meter per second is the distance (in meters) covered in 1 second. 1 kilometer per hour is the distance (in km) covered in 1 hour. Since there are 1000 meters in a kilometer and 3600 seconds in an hour, we get that 0.27778 meters per second equal one kilometer per hour (1000/3600). Converting from kmph to meters per second requires us to convert both the length and the time dimension, thus we need to first multiply by 1000 and then divide by 3600 (the number of seconds in an hour).
