    Using the timesheet converter

This versatile conversion tool can be used to convert a time expressed in hours and/or minutes to a decimal number of hours or minutes. Likewise, it can be used to convert a decimal number of hours or minutes into hh:mm formatted time. Such calculations are typical when dealing with payroll timesheets, a.k.a. work hour timesheets. We would generally recommend using our timesheet calculator as it automatically converts your entered work hours into a nice print-ready time card.

An example use is to select "time to decimal", then enter "7" in the hours field and "15" in the minutes field. The tool will automatically convert this to 7.25 hours in the output field. In another example, if a timesheet decimal value is 6.75 and you want it in number of hours and minutes, simply choose "decimal to time", then enter "6.75" and the tool will output "6 hours, 45 minutes" in the fields below.

    Timesheet conversion examples

There are many possible conversions supported in our payroll converter above. Some selected examples follow.

Time to decimal conversion

Example task: a worker has clocked 6 hours and 45 minutes on the job. How many hours is this in decimal hours?

Solution: six hours is just six hours, so we keep that as is. 45 minutes is 45/60 = .75 hours. The result is then simply 6.75 hours.

Minutes to decimal conversion

Example task: how many hours is 15 minutes?

Solution: one hour contains 60 minutes, therefore the task is to figure out the ratio of 15 to 60. 15/60 = 0.25 hours meaning 15 minutes is 0.25 hours.

Hours to decimal conversion

Example task: an event lasted for 2 hours and 30 minutes. How many hours did it last?

Solution: 30 minutes in hours equals 0.5 hours, so adding 0.5 to 2 equals 2.5 hours. Converted into minutes that is 2.5 x 60 = 150 minutes.
