Using the mins to hours converter

To use the tool, enter the time duration in minutes and it will be converted to hours (a.k.a. decimal hours), as well to hours and minutes in the fields below. For example, if you enter 115 minutes the output will be 1.92 hours, or one hour and 55 minutes. If you enter 45 minutes the output will be 0.75 decimal hours.

    Minutes to hours conversion

To convert time in minutes to decimal hours, just divide the number of minutes by sixty to get the decimal hours (see the proof below). Here is a straightforward example of calculating 15 mins into hours:

Formula:
minutes / 60 = hours
Calculation:
15 minutes / 60 = 0.25 hours
End result:
15 minutes is equal to 0.25 hours

Proof using ratios

The proof of the solution can come from viewing the problem as a ratio equation. Since an hour has sixty minutes, the ratio of the given number of minutes to sixty should equal the ratio of the number of hours to one. Since the number of hours is unknown, it results in the following equation: mins / 60 = hours / 1, which with a simple transformation results in the following formula:

hours = mins / 60

As such, one can even use a ratio calculator to convert minutes into hours.

Minutes to hours and minutes

If the result is needed in hours and minutes instead, take the decimal hours just obtained and convert those to whole hours plus minutes by following these steps:

  1. write down the whole part of the decimal hours - this is the number of whole hours
  2. multiply the fractional part by sixty to get the number of minutes
  3. write down the hours and minutes obtained from the first two steps

An alternative explanation involves using the modulo operation. In mathematics, finding the modulo of two numbers is to calculate the remainder of the division of one by the other. The modulo is the number of minutes, and the number of hours is then the number of initial minutes minus the modulo, divided by 60. See below for an example of the application of this process.

    Conversion examples

Example 1: calculate 45 minutes into hours. Solution: divide 45 mins by 60 to get 0.75 hours.

Example 2: convert 160 minutes to hours and minutes. Solution: divide 165 mins by 60 to get 2.75 hours (decimal). Write down 2 as the number of hours. Then multiply 0.75 by 60 to get the number of minutes, which results in 45. So 165 minutes equals two hours and forty-five minutes.

Example 3: convert 90 minutes to hours. Solution: divide 90 by 60 to get 1.5, which is the number of decimal hours. Write down one as the number of hours. The remainder is 0.5 so multiply 0.5 by 60 to get the number of minutes, in this case 30. 90 minutes therefore equals one hour and thirty minutes.

Example 4: 145 minutes is how many hours and minutes? Using the modulo operation: 145 modulo 60 results in 25, which is the number of minutes. Subtract 25 from 145, then divide the result by 60 to get the number of hours. 145 - 25 = 120. 120 / 60 = 2. So the answer is 2 hours and 25 minutes.
