In the United States, butter is often sold in sticks, each weighing 1/4 pounds or 4 ounces, which is about 113 grams. The 4-ounce sticks are predominantly produced in two different rectangular shapes due to historical differences in cutting and packaging machinery. Most recipes refer to Elgin-style, a.k.a. Eastern-pack shaped sticks, but some may use Western-pack shaped sticks instead. The weight of both is the same, so it should not matter which style of butter is currently available to you.

How many cups is a stick of butter?

In terms of cups, a stick of butter is equal to roughly half a cup (1/2 cup), using the US Legal Cup definition, and it equals 0.4 cups using the Imperial cup definition that is encountered less frequently nowadays.
