* * How to convert a fraction to a percentage?

Since a percent is just a decimal number divided by one hundred, working backwards means that we need to first convert the fraction to a decimal. In order to do this, we need to either multiply or divide both the numerator and denominator by a value such that the denominator becomes a power of ten. Then we can easily perform the division by shifting the decimal point the required number of places (e.g. 1 for a denominator of 10, 2 for 100, 3 for 1000, and so on). Dividing the result by 100 and appending the percent sign (%) is then all that is needed.

* * Practical Examples

If we know that the a real estate agent's commission is 3/50 of a home's sale price, we can calculate that as a percentage by first multiplying both sides by two to get the denominator to be a power of 10 (100 = 10^{2}), so we get 6/100, then we divide by 100 to get the percentage, which is then 6/100*100, the one hundred's cancel out and we get 6%.

In another scenario, consider a pizza is split in 12 pieces and someone takes 9 of them. What percentage of the pizza remains? The remainder of the pizza is 12-9 = 3 pieces, so the fraction is 3/12. To arrive at a denominator which is a power of 10, both can be divided by 3, resulting in 1/4, and then 4 can be multiplied by 2.5 to get 10. Multiplying the numerator which is now 1, by 2.5, results in 2.5. The result of the calculation in percent is 2.5/10*100 = 25%.

* * Fraction to percent conversion table

This table can be used as a reference for fractions commonly encountered in simple school or college math homework tasks.

Fraction | Percent |
---|---|

1/100 | 1 % |

1/50 | 2 % |

3/100 | 3 % |

1/25 | 4 % |

1/20 | 5 % |

3/50 | 6 % |

7/100 | 7 % |

2/25 | 8 % |

9/100 | 9 % |

1/10 | 10 % |

1/5 | 20 % |

1/4 | 25 % |

3/10 | 30 % |

2/5 | 40 % |

1/2 | 50 % |

3/5 | 60 % |

7/10 | 70 % |

3/4 | 75 % |

4/5 | 80 % |

9/10 | 90 % |

1/1 | 100 % |

The above table can be used by selecting the fraction from the left column and finding the corresponding percentage from the right column on the same row. For example, 3/4 as a percentage is 75%.
