How to convert a fraction to a percentage?

Since a percent is just a decimal number divided by one hundred, working backwards means that we need to first convert the fraction to a decimal. In order to do this, we need to either multiply or divide both the numerator and denominator by a value such that the denominator becomes a power of ten. Then we can easily perform the division by shifting the decimal point the required number of places (e.g. 1 for a denominator of 10, 2 for 100, 3 for 1000, and so on). Dividing the result by 100 and appending the percent sign (%) is then all that is needed.

    Practical Examples

If we know that the a real estate agent's commission is 3/50 of a home's sale price, we can calculate that as a percentage by first multiplying both sides by two to get the denominator to be a power of 10 (100 = 102), so we get 6/100, then we divide by 100 to get the percentage, which is then 6/100*100, the one hundred's cancel out and we get 6%.

In another scenario, consider a pizza is split in 12 pieces and someone takes 9 of them. What percentage of the pizza remains? The remainder of the pizza is 12-9 = 3 pieces, so the fraction is 3/12. To arrive at a denominator which is a power of 10, both can be divided by 3, resulting in 1/4, and then 4 can be multiplied by 2.5 to get 10. Multiplying the numerator which is now 1, by 2.5, results in 2.5. The result of the calculation in percent is 2.5/10*100 = 25%.
