How many Inches equal one Meter?
Both meters and inches are units for measuring length, or distance between two points in space. Since 1959 the inch is defined as 2.54 centimeters. One meter is equal to 100 cm, so about 39.370079 inches equal 1 meter. The symbol for inches is "in", while the symbol for meters is "m". Thus 1 m = 39.37 in. Sometimes inches are written using double quotes, like so: 39.37".
Difference between Inches and Meters
Both units measure the distance between two points in a cartesian or tridimentional space. In most practical applications they are used to measure dimensions of objects, like length, width, height, depth. The meter is often used when describing walking or running over short distances, as in sports.
The meter is a modern metric, defined by the distance light travels in vacuum in 1/299,792,458 seconds. It is the basis of the metric system adopted by most countries in the world and standardized by the International Organization of Standardization. The same standard defines the inch as 0.0254 of a meter.
Previous to that definition the inch was defined as 1/12 of a foot, and since the foot varied from location to location and from time to time, so did the inch. Due to the difference in magnitude, the inch is usually used for smaller objects and tasks that require greater precision.
