How many Centimeters equal one Meter?

Centimeters and Meters are basic metric units of dimension, length and height. It is accepted that the symbol for centimeters is cm, and m is for meters. One meter is equal to 100 centimeters, or to put it otherwise – a centimeter is one-hundredth of a meter.

Centimeters and meters are used throughout the world as measuring units, with the exception of countries that use the imperial system, such as the United States.

    Difference between Meters and Centimeters

The meter and the centimeter are units of length, both based on precise mathematical calculations. They differ in scale and in purpose – usually, depending on the object, measurements will be done using the unit that will help us find the more exact result.

Historically, the first definition of the meter came about in 1793 – 1/10,000,000 of the distance between the equator and the North Pole. The meter was redefined last in 1983 as being equal to the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 seconds in a vacuum. Today, according to the International System of Units (SI), it is the basic measurement unit.

The centimeter is roughly determined to be equal to the width of an average person’s fingernail. The prefix ‘centi’ is derived from Latin and means one-hundred. According to the SI, ‘centi’ is a factor of 1/100 magnitude. The centimeter is a unit largely used in everyday practice – when taking measurements for clothes, or when making conversions from map scale to real-world dimensions.

How to convert Meters to Centimeters

Knowing that a meter is equal to 100 centimeters, we work out the equation:

m x 100 = cm.

An easy way to do the math is moving the decimal point 2 places to the right.
