How many Inches in one Meter?

Since 1959 the inch is defined as equal to 2.54 centimeters. Since a centimeter is 1/100 of a meter, there are about 39.370079 inches in a meter. The internationally-accepted symbols are "m" for meter and "in" for inches, although sometimes double quotes can be used, e.g. 10" used to write "10 inches".

    Difference between Meters and Inches

There is a lot in common between meters and inches as they are both units of length, used to measure dimensions (height, width, length, depth) or distances between points. The meter is much larger than an inch is thus generally used to measure greater distances and larger dimensions, like the ones measured in feet and yards. The meter is also the base unit of the metric system, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (SI), and is defined as the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 seconds in a vacuum.

The inch, on the other hand, is an old metric, with first evidence of its use occurring in the 7-th century and the oldest written definition that reach us is from England in 1324. It is usually defined as 1/12 of a foot and historically varied depending on how a foot is defined. Due to its smaller magnitude it is used to measure smaller dimensions and small distances, usually up to 10 feet.

The inch is mostly used in the USA, UK, Canada, and Japan, while the meter is an internationally recognized unit with applications in most sciences and engineering. The meter is used in architecture, construction projects, for human height (e.g. 1.7m), and so on.
