How many Millimeters in one Meter?
Millimeters and meters are metric units of length. Their abbreviations are respectively mm and m. The International System of Units (SI) has established that 1 meter is equal to 1,000 millimeters, so there are 1,000 mm in a meter.
Difference between Meters and Millimeters
The meter is the primary measurement unit in the metric system. It was first introduced as such by the French Republic in 1793. The definition it had back then was 1/10,000,000 of the distance between the North Pole and the Equator through Paris.
In 1960 it was redefined regarding a certain number of wavelengths of a particular line of emission of krypton-86. The meter’s latest redefinition dates from 1983 – according to the SI, the distance light travels in vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second is equal to 1 meter.
The millimeter as a unit is derived from the meter. Its prefix ‘milli’ means ‘1/1,000 of’, therefore one millimeter is equal to 0.001 of a meter.
The mm, being of such small scale, is used in tasks that require great precision. Accurate scientific calculations and research rely on the use of detailed measurements, for example. The same applies to engineering and mechanics, so the millimeter is a unit largely used in those spheres. It is also the smallest measurement unit depicted on a standard ruler.
How to convert Meters to Millimeters
Converting units of the metric system is fairly easy, as it is based on multiples of 10. In this case, if you want to convert meters to millimeters you need to use this simple formula:
m x 1,000 = mm.
Analogically, shifting the decimal point in the given meter value three positions to the right will give you the same result.
Meters to mm conversion example
Sample task: convert 2 meters to millimeters. Solution:
Formula:
m * 1000 = mm
Calculation:
2 m * 1,000 = 2,000 mm
End result:
2 m is equal to 2,000 mm
