How many Nanometers in one Micrometer?

The micrometer and the nanometer are units of the metric system used for measuring length. Their abbreviations are respectively μm and nm. According to the International System of Units 1 nanometer is equivalent to 0.001 μm, which means that there are 1,000 nm in 1 micrometer.

    Difference between Micrometers and Nanometers

The micro- and the nanometer are both derived from the primary measurement unit that is the meter.

Micrometers used to be referred to as microns in the past, but since 1967 that term has been revoked. The μm is 1/1,000,000 the size of a meter. It is applied when measuring cell and bacteria sizes and wavelengths of radiation, for example. It is known that a standard bacterium is 1 μm in size.

A nanometer is a thousand times smaller than a micrometer. Therefore, in the past it would be called a millimicrometer, or a millimicron for short.

The nanometer is largely used unit in physics. Nowadays, most people know that visible light’s wavelength ranges from about 400 to 700 nm.

Needless to say, both nanometers and micrometers are applied exclusively in science. They are preferred in fields where matter is measured and manipulated at an atomic level.

How to convert Micrometers to Nanometers

In order to convert micrometers to nanometers, you can rely on this formula:

μm x 1,000 = nm.

μm to nm conversion example

Sample task: convert 500 micrometers to nanometers. Solution:

Formula:
μm * 1000 = nm
Calculation:
500 μm * 1,000 = 500,000 nm
End result:
500 μm is equal to 500,000 nm
